Updated Schedule to Roadwork in the Great Smoky Mountains

by Lisa Mason on June 23, 2010

The Great Smoky Mountains is a wonderful place for families to enjoy beautiful scenery and take a close look at nature. At this time some of the roads leading to the park are undergoing construction to make them smoother and safer for the millions of visitors that come to the park each year. Unfortunately, some of the road work is taking a little longer than expected. Below you’ll find an updated schedule of the road work that can help you prepare for your trip to the Great Smoky Mountains.

  • Sinks Parking Area at Little River Road- Should open on June 28th.
  • Foothills Parkway in Blount County- Single lane closures and flaggers expected through June 30th.
  • Clingmans Dome Road- Repaving with lane closures and flaggers expected through July 2nd.
  • Heintooga Ridge Road- One lane traffic with flaggers expected through August 31st.
  • Foothills Parkway in Cocke County- Construction will continue through August 31st during which time the road will be completely closed for approximately four weeks. The exact date for the closure of the road will be on the park’s website.
  • Little River and Jakes Creeks Trailheads- These trails are scheduled to be closed from July 6th to August 31st due to lack of parking from the work being done on the parking spaces.
  • Newfound Gap Road- This repaving project will run from Collins Creek Picnic Area to Cherokee, NC and is expected to last until January 2011.
  • Gatlinburg Bypass- This project is hold until further notice.

Knowing where construction projects are taking place and what to expect when you enter these areas will help you prepare for your trip to the park. There may even be alternative routes you can take that will allow you to miss the construction zones altogether now that you know where they are located.
