Heading to the Great Smoky Mountains for a hiking adventure is a great way to spend a family vacation. It’s a fun and exciting way to spend time with your family and enjoy nature at its best. Hiking and biking are two of the most popular activities enjoyed by millions of people that travel to the Smokies each year.

Before heading out on your trip to the Great Smoky Mountains you need to make sure you’re fully prepared. There’re several things that you’ll need to ensure your trip is a fun, productive and safe one. Some of these include hiking boots, jacket, hat and a backpack.

One of the most important things you’ll carry in the backpack is a survival kit. If you wander off the path and get lost or someone in your party gets injured, your survival kit will be your lifeline until help arrives. It’s important to make sure it’s packed and ready for your trip in advance.

Your Smoky Mountain survival kit should include but is not limited to the following:

  • Fully stocked first aid kit
  • Signaling item such as whistle, mirror or flare
  • Compass
  • Lighter and matches in a waterproof container
  • Plastic for shelter
  • Knife
  • Flashlight and fresh batteries
  • Non-perishable food
  • Plenty of water

Hiking and exploring the Smokies can be the perfect family vacation but safety should always be put first. Carrying along a survival kit is a great way to plan for the unexpected. No matter how careful you are, accidents can still happen and being prepared for them will make a difference in how things turn out in the end. A carefully packed survival kit will help you take care of yourself or someone else in your party when the unexpected does happen until help arrives.
